Shore Match Results; 11th July 2009

"And all the while the rain it was a raining-....... "

So run the words of a traditional song, and so it was as five anglers turned out to fish this match.
The 'Steward's Choice" of venue was The Pier as there is some shelter there. Early in the match small wrasse made up the bulk of catches with just two mackerel being caught; as darkness fell pout, pollack, a bass and a silver eel made an appearance.

Results.

1st..............................K Woods....................375cm
2nd............................G Woods....................265cm
3rd.............................B Adams....................168cm
4th.............................M Williams.................105cm
5th............................. M Chellingworth..... ..24cm

Longest round fish pool was won by G Woods with a silver eel of 60cm minimum; to straighten an eel that is determined to remain unstraightened was thought not worth the extra few points gained by a the struggle. No flatfish was caught so the pool rolls over again.

The eight members who turned up to fish the match, between Third Shelter and The Pines, fished in perfect weather conditions and seven of the eight caught fish. The match was fished over low tide and back up the tide so that reaching the reef and rough ground that holds the fish was not too difficult. Species caught were wrasse, pout, blennies, pollack, bass, flounder and plaice although it must be said none of them were very big.
The time of year means that darkness falls very late and reduces the match time spent in darkness, which is said to improve the catch rate. Merv Chellingworth left his fish catching to the last minute, reeling in at the end of the match to reveal the round fish pool winning 27cm bass on one hook.... and the flatfish pool winning 24cm plaice on another; as the flatfish pool had grown to £32, the last cast earned him £40.

Tackle hungry Durlston Bay

Seven anglers turned out to fish the President's Cup at Durlston bay. Bright sunshine and a light breeze made fishing pleasant if the inevitable tackle loss was ignored. Four anglers decided on fishing at the bottom of Zig-Zag and facing the lung-bursting climb back up, three decided on the easier access walking around Peveril Point and along the beach; that turned out to be the best choice as fish were easier to find there. The main catch was wrasse with a couple of rockling and two bass, one of which, at 60cm and 4.6lbs, took the longest fish pool for G Woods.

Results.

1st...........................G Woods...............417cm
2nd.........................K Woods................249cm
3rd..........................M Williams...........120cm
4th..........................B Adams.................47cm
5th..........................M Chellingworth... 16cm
J and A Alison did not catch.

No flatfish was caught so the flatfish pool rolls over, again.

Shore Match Results, 23rd May 2009.

Only six members decided to fish the shore match as the conditions were ideal for the boat match. The match was fished in fine weather with little or no breeze on the section of the beach below The Grand and The Pines. The two members who decided to fish to the right when arriving at the bottom of the slope found wrasse on the reef while those electing to go to the left, away from other beach users found little in the way of fish until darkness. After dark the pout and school bass made an appearance. Chris Clark recovered from the shock of parting with money sufficiently to haul an impressive number of fish from the rough ground. All anglers managed to catch although some left it late....

Results

1st...................................C Clark 285cm.
2nd..................................G Woods 72cm.
3rd...................................M Williams 68cm.
4th....................................K Woods 41cm

6th....................................B Adams 18cm.

C Clark won the longest round fish pool with a huge shore rockling of 36cm; the flatfish pool is carried forward to the next match.

A forecast of strong wind meant the cancellation of the dingy match but eleven members turned out to fish the shore match which was a 'steward's choice'.
The steward chose The Pier as a venue and anglers elected to fish all along the pier. The top two places were taken by anglers fishing near the Dive Shop.
Some new species appeared on the catch list for 2009; three garfish turned up as well as some dogfish; wrasse have returned but not in great numbers. Other species caught were pollack, pouting and blennies.

Results.

1st W Rice.............................227cm
2nd S Chamberlain................214cm
3rd K Woods..........................132cm
4th G Woods...........................116cm

W Rice won the longest round fish pool with a dogfish of 60cm
